Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- الطَّيْرَ (At-Tayr): The birds.
- مَحْشُورَةً (Mahshoorah): Gathered together, assembled, or brought together in submission.
- أَوَّابٌ (Awwab): One who returns repeatedly, obedient, and submissive—here, returning to glorify Allah in unison with Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him).
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah reminds us of the magnificent favor He bestowed upon His Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him), granting him a kingdom and a miracle that no other human has been given. Just as Allah subjected the mountains to join Dawud in glorifying Him morning and evening, He also subjected the birds—gathered in flocks around him—to join in that same glorification. The birds were held in the sky, obedient and submissive, and every single one of them would return to its Lord with praise, following Dawud’s lead. This was not a mere coincidence of nature; it was a divine orchestration, a living symphony of creation praising its Creator.
The word "Awwab" here carries a profound meaning: it describes one who turns back to Allah again and again, with love, humility, and devotion. The birds, though simple creatures, were made to exemplify this quality—they would return to their Lord in glorification, just as Dawud himself was a man who constantly turned back to Allah in repentance and worship.
A Da’wah Reflection:
Imagine the scene: a prophet standing in the light of dawn, his voice raised in praise, and the mountains around him echoing his words, while the birds above circle and sing in harmony. This is the beauty of submission to Allah—it unites all of creation in a single purpose. If the mountains and birds, which have no intellect, can be so perfectly obedient to their Lord, how much more should we, who have been given reason and free will, hasten to obey Him? Let this verse inspire you to make your life a constant "return" to Allah—through prayer, through repentance, and through glorifying His name in every moment. For when you turn to Him, you join the entire universe in a chorus of praise, and there is no greater honor than that.
