Word Meanings:
- اشْمَأَزَّتْ (ishma'azzat): To shrink back, recoil, or feel intense aversion and discomfort.
- يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ (yastabshirun): To rejoice, be delighted, and show visible happiness.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse paints a vivid and profound picture of the spiritual condition of those who deny the Hereafter. When Allah alone is mentioned—when His Oneness is proclaimed, and His exclusive right to worship is affirmed—their hearts shrink and recoil in aversion. They feel a deep discomfort, as if the very mention of Allah's sole divinity disturbs their inner peace. This is because their hearts are attached to falsehood, and the truth of Tawheed (monotheism) clashes with their desires and their way of life.
But when the false deities are mentioned—the idols, the stones, the so-called intercessors, or any being they associate with Allah—their faces light up with joy, and their hearts swell with delight. They rejoice because this aligns with their whims and desires. They find comfort in falsehood because it requires no change, no submission, and no accountability. It allows them to continue living as they please, without the weight of responsibility before their Creator.
This verse exposes a painful reality: the hearts of the disbelievers are so inverted that they find peace in what harms them and are disturbed by what saves them. It is like a sick person who recoils from medicine but delights in poison. The reason for this is their denial of the Hereafter—the belief that they will be resurrected and held accountable for their deeds. When a person loses the awareness of the Day of Judgment, they lose the very anchor that keeps the soul aligned with truth.
For the believer, this verse is a powerful reminder of the sweetness of Tawheed. When Allah is mentioned, the believer's heart finds rest, tranquility, and joy—because they know that in His remembrance lies true peace. The believer rejoices in the Oneness of Allah, for it is the key to salvation and the source of all goodness. The contrast between the two reactions is stark: one heart recoils from the truth, the other embraces it; one rejoices in falsehood, the other finds its happiness in the truth.
Dear reader, reflect on your own heart. When you hear the call to Tawheed—when you hear that there is no god but Allah—does your heart expand with faith and joy? Or does it shrink? The answer reveals the state of your soul. The path of Islam is the path of pure monotheism, and it is the only path that leads to eternal bliss. Do not be like those who are pleased with falsehood and disturbed by the truth. Open your heart to the call of Allah, and you will find a joy that no idol, no worldly desire, and no false hope can ever provide. For in the remembrance of Allah alone, hearts find their true rest.
