📖 English Meaning
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Shubbiha lahum (شُبِّهَ لَهُمْ): It was made to appear to them; i.e., another man was made to resemble Jesus in his appearance, and they mistook him for Jesus.
  • Yaqeenan (يَقِينًا): With certainty and absolute conviction, free from any doubt.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse continues to expose the crimes and false claims of the Children of Israel. Among their grievous sins was their boastful declaration: *"Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah."* They uttered this not out of faith or reverence, but as a mockery and a challenge—scoffing at the very idea that a man claiming prophethood could be so easily eliminated.

But Allah—the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful—refutes their claim decisively: "And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him." The historical reality is that they seized a man whom Allah made to resemble Jesus, and it was that man they crucified and killed, while Jesus himself was raised up by Allah to the heavens, safe and unharmed. Their eyes deceived them, and their arrogance blinded them to the truth.

Then Allah addresses those who differed about Jesus—whether among the Jews who claimed to have killed him, or the Christians who either claimed to have crucified him or believed he was raised—saying: "Indeed, those who differed over him are in doubt about him." They have no certain knowledge; they are merely chasing conjectures and assumptions. They did not kill him with certainty, nor did they crucify him with certainty. Their entire narrative rests on confusion and guesswork, not on verified fact.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse is a powerful reminder of Allah's absolute sovereignty over all affairs. The enemies of truth may plot, scheme, and boast, but Allah's decree prevails, and His protection covers His righteous servants. Jesus—peace be upon him—was not left to the mercy of his enemies; rather, Allah honored him and raised him up, demonstrating that no one can harm a servant whom Allah chooses to protect.

For us as believers, this story carries a profound lesson: do not be deceived by the apparent strength of falsehood, and do not despair when the truth seems weak. Allah's promise is true, His help is near, and His wisdom surpasses all human understanding. The Jews' claim of victory was an illusion; the reality was Allah's triumph and the preservation of His Messenger.

Moreover, this verse invites us to hold fast to certainty in our faith. The people of the Book were divided and doubtful because they relied on speculation rather than revelation. As Muslims, we are blessed with the Qur'an—a book of absolute truth, free from doubt—and with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which clarifies all matters. Let us not trade certainty for conjecture, and let us cling to the clear guidance of Allah, for He is the Best of Protectors and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

📜 Verse 155-159 — An-Nisa

And [We cursed them] for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped". Rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.
And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander,
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.
Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in Jesus before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness.
