Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Buh'tanan (بُهْتَانًا): A grave lie, slander, or false accusation invented against someone.
- Aziman (عَظِيمًا): Immense, severe, or enormous in magnitude.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues to mention the reasons why the Children of Israel were cast out of Allah’s mercy and subjected to His curse. Alongside their breaking of the covenant, their rejection of Allah’s signs, and their killing of the prophets unjustly, another grave sin is highlighted here: their persistent disbelief and their monstrous slander against the noble Maryam (peace be upon her).
The phrase "and their disbelief" refers to their rejection of the truth, particularly their denial of ‘Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) as a Messenger of Allah and their refusal to accept his prophethood. But their crime did not stop at disbelief—they compounded it with a heinous verbal assault. They accused Maryam, the pure and chaste servant of Allah, of a terrible immorality, fabricating a lie against her honor. This was a slander of the utmost magnitude, for she was a woman of unparalleled piety and virtue, chosen by Allah above all women of the worlds. Their accusation was not merely a mistake or a misunderstanding; it was a deliberate, vicious falsehood—a "buh'tan" of the greatest kind.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the sanctity of honor and reputation in Islam. The Children of Israel were punished not only for their disbelief but also for their slander against a righteous soul. It teaches us that the tongue is a grave responsibility. To accuse an innocent person of immorality without proof is a sin of immense proportions, and Allah, the All-Knowing, defends His righteous servants both in this world and the Hereafter.
Reflection and Da'wah:
How beautiful is the justice of Islam! It protects the honor of every individual, especially the innocent and the pure. The story of Maryam is a shining example of how Allah elevates those who remain steadfast in faith and purity, even when surrounded by false accusations. As believers, we must guard our tongues from slander and falsehood, for Allah hears every word and knows every intention. Let this verse inspire us to be people of truth, justice, and mercy—those who defend the honor of others rather than destroy it. And let us take heed: the same Allah who defended Maryam from her accusers will defend His righteous servants on the Day when all secrets are laid bare. Embrace the purity of Islam, for it is a religion that elevates the soul and protects the dignity of all humanity.
