Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- And then (Wa-idhan): In this context, it means "if they had done so" — referring to the hypothetical obedience mentioned in the preceding verses.
- From Us (min ladunnā): From Our very presence — indicating a special, direct bestowal of divine favor, not earned merely by deeds but granted through divine grace.
- A great reward (ajran ʿaẓīman): An immense and magnificent recompense — encompassing both worldly blessings and everlasting bliss in the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse follows a powerful conditional statement in which Allah, the Most Merciful, mentions what would have happened had the hypocrites and the weak-hearted truly obeyed His commands — such as fighting in His cause or leaving their homes for His sake. Only a few would have complied. But then, Allah turns to a beautiful promise: had they sincerely responded to the guidance and done what they were advised — had they obeyed with genuine faith — He would have granted them a tremendous reward from His own boundless treasury.
This reward is described as coming *"from Us"* — not merely as a wage for their labor, but as a generous gift from the Lord of all worlds. It is a reward that combines the good of this life — peace of heart, steadfastness, honor, and divine support — with the eternal bliss of the Hereafter, where they would enjoy gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding forever in the pleasure of their Creator.
The verse gently reminds every believer that obedience to Allah is never a loss. Every act of submission — even the difficult ones — opens the door to divine generosity that no human mind can fully comprehend. When Allah says "great reward," He means a reward that encompasses all that is good, all that brings joy, and all that elevates the soul.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound and heartwarming message: Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear, and He does not command anything except that its reward is far greater than the effort. The hypocrites were spared the obligation of fighting and leaving their homes because they were not sincere — yet even for them, the door of obedience was open, and had they walked through it, they would have received the same magnificent reward.
For you, dear believer, this is an invitation to seize every opportunity of obedience — prayer, charity, patience, truthfulness, and striving in Allah's path. Do not look at the difficulty of the deed; look at the greatness of the Rewarder. When you obey Allah sincerely, you are not merely performing a duty — you are opening a channel through which His mercy, His guidance, and His boundless generosity flow into your life.
Let this verse inspire you to be among those who, when Allah calls, respond with haste and sincerity — for their reward is with their Lord, and what is with Allah never perishes. It is the great reward that fills the heart with contentment in this world and illuminates the path to eternal happiness in the next.
