Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- يُؤْفَكُ (yu'faku): To be turned away, diverted, or perverted from the truth. It implies a deliberate turning aside from what is right and evident.
- يَجْحَدُونَ (yajhadūn): To deny, reject, or refuse to acknowledge something while knowing it to be true—a stubborn and obstinate rejection.
Explanation of the Verse:
Just as you, O disbelievers of Quraysh, have been turned away from the truth and have preferred falsehood over the clear signs of Allah, so too are those who deny Allah’s signs and evidences turned away from the path of guidance in every time and place. When people refuse to reflect upon the divine proofs—the verses of the Qur'an, the wonders of creation, and the unmistakable signs of Allah’s oneness—their hearts become sealed, and they are deprived of the ability to see the truth, no matter how clear it may be. This is not a punishment inflicted upon them unjustly, but rather the natural consequence of their own stubbornness and refusal to submit. They are left to wander in confusion, unable to find the straight path, because they chose to reject what their own intellects and fitrah (innate disposition) already knew to be true.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the heart that sincerely seeks the truth will always find it, for Allah does not let the efforts of the sincere go to waste. But the one who turns away from Allah’s signs—out of pride, arrogance, or blind following of desires—will find that the very light which could have guided them becomes obscured. How tragic it is to possess the keys to salvation and yet throw them away! Dear reader, do not let your heart become like those who denied the truth despite its clarity. Open your eyes to the signs of Allah around you—the heavens, the earth, your own creation—and you will find that they all point to the One True God. Embrace Islam with a sincere heart, for it is the path of peace, purpose, and eternal success. The doors of repentance are always open, and Allah’s mercy is far greater than your sins. Do not delay, for the heart that hardens today may not soften tomorrow.
