Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Abwāba Jahannam: The gates of Hell, which are seven in number, each designated for a specific category of sinners.
  • Khālidīna fīhā: Abiding therein forever, without end or exit.
  • Mathwā: A dwelling place, resting abode, or permanent residence.
  • Al-Mutakabbirīn: Those who were arrogant and proud, refusing to submit to the truth and looking down upon others.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the arrogant disbelievers are brought before their Lord, they will be addressed with a command that carries both humiliation and finality: "Enter the gates of Hell." These are the seven gates that have been prepared specifically for them, each one leading to a level of punishment suited to their deeds. They will not merely pass through these gates temporarily; rather, they will abide therein forever, with no hope of release and no respite from the torment.

The verse then declares: "How evil is the dwelling place of the arrogant!" This is a powerful statement that exposes the ultimate fate of pride and haughtiness. Those who, in their worldly lives, refused to bow to the truth, looked down upon the messengers of Allah, and considered themselves superior to others, will now find their eternal residence in the lowest of places. Their arrogance, which once made them feel elevated, has now become the very cause of their humiliation and everlasting suffering.

Notice that the verse does not say "how evil is the entrance," but rather "how evil is the dwelling place." This subtle choice of words emphasizes that the purpose of their entry is not a brief visit, but a permanent stay. The torment is not a passing punishment; it is their eternal home, a place where they will remain in disgrace, regret, and agony.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, let this verse serve as a profound reminder of the danger of arrogance. Pride is a disease of the heart that blinds a person to the truth and distances them from the mercy of Allah. The gates of Hell are open for those who reject guidance out of stubbornness and self-importance. But the gates of Paradise are equally open for those who humble themselves before their Creator, accept the truth with sincerity, and treat others with kindness and respect.

Do not let your ego be the barrier between you and eternal bliss. Humble yourself before Allah, submit to His commands, and follow the path of His beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. For the one who lowers themselves in obedience to Allah will be raised in honor, while the one who exalts themselves in defiance will be lowered into the fire. Choose wisely, for this life is but a fleeting moment, and the Hereafter is the true and everlasting abode. May Allah protect us all from the fate of the arrogant and grant us the humility that leads to His eternal pleasure.

📜 Verse 74-78 — Ghafir

Other than Allah?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allah put astray the disbelievers.
[The angels will say], "That was because you used to exult upon the earth without right and you used to behave insolently.
Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."
So be patient, [O Muhammad]; indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.
And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allah. So when the command of Allah comes, it will be concluded in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].
