Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the polytheists of Makkah with a sharp, rhetorical question that exposes the absurdity of their beliefs about Allah. They claimed that the angels were Allah’s daughters, yet they themselves despised having daughters and preferred sons. The verse rebukes them by saying: "Do you claim that your Lord has taken for Himself daughters from among His creation, while He has chosen and favored you with sons?"
The question is not a genuine inquiry but a stern condemnation. It highlights the contradiction in their logic: they attributed to Allah what they themselves considered shameful and inferior, while reserving what they valued most—sons—for themselves. This was a common pagan belief in pre-Islamic Arabia, where some tribes regarded angels as female deities or daughters of Allah, despite their own disdain for female offspring.
The verse challenges their distorted worldview and their audacity to assign such attributes to the Creator. It is a rhetorical device that leaves them with no answer, as their own customs and preferences testify against them. If they did not accept daughters for themselves, how could they attribute them to the Lord of the heavens and the earth?
This verse also carries a timeless lesson for humanity: we must never project our flawed human preferences or limited understanding onto Allah. He is far above any imperfection, and His nature and attributes are beyond human analogy. The polytheists’ claim was not only a lie but a profound disrespect to the majesty of Allah, who created all things and is free from any need or deficiency.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse invites every reader to reflect on the greatness of Allah and to purify their belief from any form of distortion. How can we, as weak and limited beings, dictate what is fitting for the All-Powerful Creator? Islam came to free humanity from such false notions and to establish a pure, untainted understanding of Allah—One who has no partners, no equals, and no offspring. It is a call to submit to the truth with humility, recognizing that Allah’s wisdom and perfection far exceed our limited minds. When we embrace this truth, we find peace in knowing that our worship is directed to the One who truly deserves it, and our lives gain purpose and meaning under His guidance. Let this verse be a reminder to always seek knowledge and understanding, and to approach the Qur’an with an open heart, for it is the ultimate guide to a life of righteousness and eternal success.
