Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Rahman (The Most Merciful): One of Allah's most beautiful names, emphasizing His encompassing mercy.
  • Walad (son/child): Offspring or progeny.
  • Al-ʿĀbidīn (the worshippers): Those who devote themselves to worship and obedience.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah commands His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) to address the polytheists of Quraysh who falsely claimed that the angels were Allah's daughters. Allah says: *"Say, 'If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of worshippers.'"*

This is a powerful rhetorical argument that exposes the absurdity of their claim. The Prophet is instructed to respond in a way that turns their own logic against them: if it were true—as they falsely alleged—that Allah had a child, then the Prophet would be the first to worship that child, because he is the foremost in submitting to Allah's will and the leader of all worshippers. However, this statement is conditional and hypothetical, meant to demonstrate that such a thing is utterly impossible.

The verse then implicitly affirms the absolute oneness and perfection of Allah. He is far above needing a son or partner. The very notion is a contradiction of His divine nature—He is Eternal, Self-Sufficient, and unlike any of His creation. Having a child would imply similarity to created beings, needing a spouse, and being subject to the laws of reproduction—all of which are beneath His infinite majesty.

The deeper message here is a call to pure monotheism (Tawhid). Allah is One, without equal, without partner, without offspring. He is the Creator of all things, and everything else is His servant. The Prophet's statement "I am the first of worshippers" is not just a rebuttal—it is a declaration of his complete devotion and submission to Allah alone, and an invitation for all of humanity to follow this same path of sincere worship.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse beautifully demonstrates how the Qur'an addresses false beliefs with wisdom and compelling logic. Instead of harsh confrontation, the Prophet is taught to engage with their claims in a way that leads them to realize the truth themselves. As Muslims, we too should learn this approach—inviting others to the beauty of Islam with patience, wisdom, and sound reasoning.

The purity of Allah's oneness is the foundation of our faith. When we internalize that Allah is absolutely unique and perfect, our hearts find rest. We worship Him alone, free from superstition and false intermediaries. This is the essence of Islam—a direct, personal, and profound connection with our Creator. And when we truly understand this, we become like the Prophet—the first to submit, the first to worship, and the first to proclaim the truth with unwavering certainty.

May Allah guide us all to this pure faith and make us among those who worship Him alone, with sincerity and devotion.

📜 Verse 79-83 — Az-Zukhruf

Or have they devised [some] affair? But indeed, We are devising [a plan].
Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers are with them recording.
Say, [O Muhammad], "If the Most Merciful had a son, then I would be the first of [his] worshippers."
Exalted is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Lord of the Throne, above what they describe.
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised.
