Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, tell the believers — those who have sincerely embraced faith in Allah and followed His messengers — to forgive and overlook the harm directed at them by those who do not believe. These disbelievers neither hope for Allah’s reward nor fear His severe punishment; they are heedless of His mighty days, when He destroyed past nations for their arrogance and transgression. They harm the believers with words and actions, yet the believers are commanded to respond with patience, pardon, and forbearance.
The wisdom behind this command is that Allah will certainly recompense every group according to what they have earned. He will reward the believers who endured patiently and forgave, with His abundant mercy and Paradise. And He will seize the disbelievers who persisted in their aggression and wrongdoing, with His justice and punishment — whether in this world or the Hereafter. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and no deed is lost with Him.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, this verse is a profound lesson in noble character. Allah does not command you to forgive because He is unaware of the harm done to you — rather, He knows it fully and has recorded it. He asks you to elevate yourself above revenge, trusting that His justice is greater and His recompense is more complete. When you forgive for His sake, you are not losing; you are gaining His love, His reward, and a heart free from bitterness. And when you see the oppressors persisting in their ways, do not be distressed — their end is with Allah, and He never wrongs anyone. So hold firm to patience and forgiveness, for this is the path of the prophets and the way of the righteous.
