Word Meanings:
- Al-Khabeeth (الْخَبِيثُ): The impure, the evil, the unlawful, or the harmful — whether in people, deeds, or provisions.
- At-Tayyib (الطَّيِّبُ): The pure, the good, the lawful, or the beneficial — in all aspects.
- Ulul-Albab (أُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ): People of sound intellect and pure understanding — those who use their reason to discern truth from falsehood.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, say to all people: The impure and the pure are never equal — no matter what aspect of life you consider. The disbeliever is not equal to the believer, the disobedient is not equal to the obedient, the ignorant is not equal to the knowledgeable, the innovator is not equal to the true follower of the Sunnah, and unlawful wealth is not equal to lawful earnings. Even if the abundance of the impure amazes you — with its vast numbers, its glittering appeal, or its temporary success — that abundance is nothing but a deception. Quantity never changes quality, and the little that is pure and blessed is far better than the much that is impure and cursed.
This verse was revealed in a context where some Muslims were tempted to harm the pagan pilgrims who came to Mecca for Hajj, thinking that attacking them would be a righteous act. Allah clarified that even though those pilgrims were disbelievers, harming them was impure and forbidden, while leaving them alone was pure and lawful — and the two are never equal.
So fear Allah, O people of sound intellect, by abandoning all that is impure and embracing all that is pure. Let your minds lead you to righteousness, not to being fooled by appearances or numbers. Do this so that you may attain true success — the success of earning Allah’s pleasure and entering His eternal Paradise. This is the ultimate triumph, and it is only achieved by those who purify their hearts, their deeds, and their earnings.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is a timeless compass for your life. In a world where evil often appears overwhelming and good seems scarce, remember that Allah’s scale is not like ours. He does not look at quantity but at quality, not at appearances but at sincerity. The pure drop of halal is more beloved to Him than oceans of haram. The single righteous deed done with taqwa outweighs mountains of actions done without it.
So let this verse strengthen your resolve: do not be discouraged when you see evil flourishing around you, and do not be tempted to follow the crowd. Hold firmly to what is pure and lawful, even if you stand alone. Fear Allah with the intellect He gave you, and you will surely succeed — in this life and the next. For Allah never abandons those who choose purity over impurity, and His promise of success to the righteous is certain and true.
