Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shadeed al-'Iqab (شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ): Severe in punishment; the One whose retribution is mighty and inescapable for those who persist in disobedience.
- Ghafoor (غَفُور): The Oft-Forgiving; the One who pardons repeatedly and covers the sins of His servants with His mercy.
- Raheem (رَحِيم): The Most Merciful; the One who bestows His compassion and kindness upon His creation, especially upon those who turn to Him in repentance.
Explanation of the Verse:
O people, know with certainty and let this knowledge settle firmly in your hearts: Allah — glorified and exalted be He — is severe in punishment for those who defy His commands, transgress His limits, and persist in sin without seeking His forgiveness. His punishment is not like the punishment of any other; it is absolute, just, and overwhelming. No one can escape His grasp, and no power can shield a soul from His retribution when it is due.
Yet, in the very same breath, Allah reveals His other attribute: He is Oft-Forgiving and Most Merciful to those who obey Him, repent sincerely, and return to Him with a contrite heart. His mercy is not limited by the magnitude of sin; it is vast enough to encompass all who seek it. The door of repentance is never closed, and His forgiveness is granted to the one who abandons disobedience and turns to Him in humility and submission.
This verse beautifully balances fear and hope — two wings that carry the believer on the path to Allah. Fear of His punishment keeps us away from sin and negligence, while hope in His mercy draws us closer to Him with love and longing. Neither should overwhelm the other; the true believer walks between them, ever mindful of Allah's justice and ever hopeful of His grace.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a direct address to you. Allah is telling you: *Know* — not just assume, not just hear, but know with certainty — that His punishment is severe. This knowledge should awaken you from the slumber of heedlessness. But do not despair, for He immediately reminds you that He is Ghafoor and Raheem. No matter how many times you have fallen, His mercy is greater. No matter how heavy your sins, His forgiveness is more vast.
So, hasten to Him today. Repent with a sincere heart, resolve to obey Him, and taste the sweetness of His mercy. For the One who created you, who knows your weaknesses and your struggles, is waiting with open arms of forgiveness. Do not let Shaytan deceive you into despair, and do not let your desires deceive you into complacency. Balance your life between hope and fear, and you will find peace in this world and salvation in the next.
