Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fitnatakum (فِتْنَتَكُمْ): Your punishment, trial, or burning torment. In this context, it refers to the scorching Fire they are made to enter.
  • Tasta'jilun (تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ): You used to hasten or demand with urgency — meaning they challenged the Prophet (peace be upon him) to bring the punishment quickly out of mockery and disbelief.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers are cast into the blazing Fire and its heat sears their skin, they will be addressed with a rebuke that cuts to their very souls: "Taste your punishment!" This is the very torment you once mocked and dared to hasten in this worldly life. When the warnings of the prophets reached their ears, they did not take them seriously; instead, they scoffed and said, "When will this punishment come, if you are truthful?" They challenged the promise of Allah out of arrogance and denial. Now, that which they ridiculed has become an inescapable reality. The word *fitnah* here is not a mere trial but the burning punishment itself — a direct consequence of their own deeds. The address is both a painful reality and a humiliating reproach: this is what you asked for, so taste it now.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

How heedless is the one who mocks the warnings of Allah! The Qur'an repeatedly tells us that the Hereafter is certain, yet some people treat it as a distant fantasy. This verse is a powerful reminder that Allah's promise is true, and His punishment is real. No one can escape it, and no one can delay it. But the door of repentance is open in this life — before that Day arrives when no excuse will be accepted. Let us not be among those who demand signs or hasten the punishment out of arrogance. Instead, let us hasten to good deeds, seek Allah's mercy, and take the warnings of the Qur'an to heart. For on that Day, the believers will be in bliss, while the deniers will taste the very thing they once mocked. Choose now, before it is too late, to be among those who say, "We hear and we obey."
