Word Meanings:

  • يُفْتَنُونَ (yuf'tanūn): They are tormented and burned; the root meaning relates to being tested through severe punishment, specifically here meaning they will be subjected to the burning fire.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse answers the question posed by the disbelievers who mockingly asked, "When is the Day of Judgment?" Allah responds that it will be the Day when they are thrown upon the Fire and tormented with its scorching heat. They will be burned, punished, and humiliated — a direct consequence of their denial and ridicule. On that Day, they will be told: "Taste your punishment — this is what you used to hasten and mock in the worldly life."

The verse paints a vivid picture of the reality awaiting those who reject the truth: they will be placed upon the Fire, not merely near it, but upon it — a position of utter helplessness and agony. This is the ultimate recompense for their arrogance and their constant challenge to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to bring about the punishment they doubted.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a powerful reminder that the Hereafter is certain, and no one can escape its reality. The disbelievers in Makkah used to ask sarcastically, "When is this promise?" — but Allah made it clear that the Day will come, and on that Day, they will face exactly what they mocked. Let this be a lesson for us all: do not take the warnings of Allah lightly. The Fire is real, and its torment is beyond imagination. Yet, Allah in His mercy has sent us the Qur'an and the Prophet (peace be upon him) to guide us away from it. Turn to Allah now, seek His forgiveness, and strive to live a life of obedience — for the One who created you is the One who will judge you, and His mercy is vast for those who repent before it is too late. Do not be among those who wait until the Fire is before their eyes, for then no plea will be accepted.
