Word Meanings:

  • "Fi sarratin" (فِي صَرَّةٍ): A loud cry or shout, derived from the word *sareer* (الصَّرير), which refers to a piercing or intense sound. It indicates a sudden exclamation of astonishment or joy.
  • "Fasakkat wajhaha" (فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا): She struck or slapped her face with the palm of her hand, a natural gesture of utter amazement, as is customary for women when they are taken aback by something extraordinary.
  • "Ajoozun aqeem" (عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ): "An old woman, barren" — she described herself as advanced in age and incapable of bearing children.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Sarah, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), heard the angels' glad tidings of a son — Isaac — she was overcome with sheer astonishment. The news seemed impossible to her, for she was an elderly woman who had never been able to conceive. In that moment of overwhelming surprise, she let out a loud cry, rushed forward, and instinctively slapped her own face — a natural reaction of a woman when faced with something beyond her expectation or comprehension. Then she exclaimed, in disbelief: "How can I give birth when I am an old woman, and moreover, I have always been barren?"

Her reaction was not one of rejection or denial of Allah's power, but rather a human expression of wonder at the miraculous nature of the promise. It is a beautiful reminder that even the most righteous servants of Allah may find themselves amazed by His decrees, yet they ultimately submit to His will. Sarah's words reflect her humility and her awareness of her own physical limitations, but the divine response that followed — the birth of Isaac — proved that Allah's command transcends all natural causes and human expectations.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This scene from the life of Ibrahim and Sarah carries a profound lesson for every believer: Allah's power is not bound by age, circumstance, or human capability. What appears impossible in our eyes is effortless for the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Just as He granted a child to a barren old woman, He can transform your trials into blessings, your weaknesses into strengths, and your despair into hope. Never underestimate the mercy of Allah, and never limit His ability by your own reasoning. When He wills a matter, He only says to it "Be," and it is. So, turn to Him with a heart full of trust, for His promises are true, and His grace knows no bounds.
