Word Meanings:

  • أَوْجَسَ (awjasa): He felt or harbored within himself (a secret feeling).
  • خِيفَةً (kheefah): Fear or apprehension.
  • غُلَامٍ عَلِيمٍ (ghulamun ‘aleem): A boy (son) who would be deeply knowledgeable—specifically, in the knowledge of Allah and His religion.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the angels came to Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) as honored guests, he prepared a roasted calf for them as a generous host. However, when he noticed that they did not extend their hands to eat, a subtle and hidden fear crept into his heart. He sensed that these visitors might not be ordinary guests—perhaps they were enemies or bearers of ill intent, for guests who refuse food often carry a troubling purpose.

The angels, being perceptive and aware of his inner state, immediately reassured him: "Do not fear." They revealed their true identity as messengers sent by Allah, and then delivered the most joyous news—that his wife Sarah would bear him a son named Ishaq (Isaac), a boy who would grow to possess profound knowledge of Allah, His religion, and the wisdom of prophethood. This was a miracle, for both Ibrahim and Sarah were advanced in age, yet Allah’s power knows no bounds.

This verse beautifully captures the contrast between human anxiety and divine reassurance. Ibrahim’s fear was natural—he was a kind and cautious soul, and the unexpected behavior of his guests unsettled him. But Allah, in His mercy, replaced that fear with glad tidings, turning a moment of unease into a moment of immense blessing. It teaches us that when we place our trust in Allah, even our deepest worries can be transformed into sources of hope and joy. The promise of a knowledgeable son was not just a personal gift to Ibrahim; it was a sign of Allah’s continued guidance for humanity, as Ishaq would become a prophet and a link in the chain of divine revelation.

A Call to Reflection:

This story invites us to reflect on the nature of fear and trust. How often do we let our anxieties cloud our perception of Allah’s plans? Ibrahim, despite his momentary fear, did not lose his composure or his faith. Instead, he received the angels’ message with humility and gratitude. For us, this is a powerful reminder: when life brings unexpected challenges or unsettling circumstances, we should remember that Allah’s mercy is always near. A believer’s heart, even when it trembles, finds peace in the remembrance of Allah. Let this verse inspire you to replace your fears with hope, knowing that the same Allah who blessed Ibrahim with a wise son in his old age is fully capable of turning your trials into triumphs. Embrace the glad tidings of His mercy, and let your heart rest in the certainty that He never abandons those who trust in Him.
