Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khawd (خَوْضٍ): Engaging in falsehood, plunging into vain and futile talk, or being deeply immersed in arguments and disputes based on falsehood.
- Yal'aboon (يَلْعَبُونَ): Playing, mocking, or treating something with levity and jest, without seriousness or reverence.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes those who will face destruction on the Day of Judgment—those who are engrossed in falsehood and play with it. They immerse themselves in vain arguments, mock the truth, and treat matters of faith and the Hereafter as mere amusement. They do not take the warnings of the prophets seriously, nor do they reflect on the reality of resurrection and accountability. Instead, they busy themselves with idle talk, ridicule the messengers, and jest about the very signs of Allah. Their hearts are heedless, and their actions are driven by arrogance and disregard for the consequences that await them.
This description serves as a stern warning: those who waste their lives in frivolous pursuits, rejecting the truth and mocking divine guidance, will face a severe reckoning. Their playfulness in this world will turn into regret and torment in the Hereafter, for they chose vanity over wisdom and jest over sincerity.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and consider: how often do we find ourselves caught up in idle talk, mockery, or distractions that pull us away from the purpose of our existence? This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder that life is not a game to be taken lightly. Allah has created us with a noble purpose—to know Him, worship Him, and prepare for the eternal life to come. The Qur'an repeatedly calls us to awaken from heedlessness and to invest our time in what truly benefits us: faith, good deeds, and sincere reflection. Let this verse inspire you to turn away from vain pursuits and embrace the light of guidance, for the Hereafter is real, and its rewards are everlasting. Do not let the laughter of this world become the sorrow of the next.
