Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Wayl (ويل): Destruction, ruin, severe punishment, or a valley in Hell. It is a word of threat and warning indicating great calamity.
  • Yawma-idhin (يومئذ): On that Day — referring to the Day of Judgment.
  • Al-Mukadhdhibin (المكذبين): Those who deny — specifically those who reject the messengers, the revelation, and the promise of resurrection and accountability.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On that Day — the Day when the sky will shake, the mountains will move, and the heavens will be torn apart — destruction and ruin will be the fate of those who denied the truth. These are the people who, throughout their lives, rejected the messengers sent to them, mocked the divine revelation, and treated the promise of the Hereafter as a mere fantasy. They immersed themselves in falsehood, playing with their religion as a pastime, laughing at the warnings and turning away from the signs of Allah.

Their denial was not born of ignorance alone, but of arrogance and stubbornness. They saw the signs of Allah’s power in creation, heard the call of the prophets, and yet chose to reject, ridicule, and turn away. On that Day, the reality they denied will become undeniable — and their punishment will be absolute and inescapable.

This verse serves as a profound warning to every soul: the Day of Judgment is certain, and the consequences of denial are real. No one who mocks the truth or rejects the messengers will escape the justice of Allah. The word "Wayl" carries with it the weight of eternal loss — a fate of utter misery for those who closed their hearts to guidance.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a threat — it is a mercy in disguise. It is Allah’s way of awakening hearts before it is too late. The door of repentance remains open in this life. The same tongue that denied can testify to the truth. The same heart that hardened can soften with remembrance. Do not let yourself be among those who wait until the Day when no excuse will be accepted. Turn to your Lord now, embrace the truth, and save yourself from the Wayl that awaits the deniers. For Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful — and His mercy is far greater than your sins. But His justice is also certain, and no one will be wronged on that Day. Choose now, before the choice is taken from you.

On the Day the heaven will sway with circular motion
And the mountains will pass on, departing -
Then woe, that Day, to the deniers,
Who are in [empty] discourse amusing themselves.
The Day they are thrust toward the fire of Hell with a [violent] thrust, [its angels will say],
