Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Asma’ (أسماء): Names or labels with no reality behind them.
- Sultan (سلطان): Authoritative proof, evidence, or a compelling argument.
- Zann (الظن): Conjecture, assumption, or mere speculation without certainty.
- Hawa (الهوى): Desires and whims of the soul, especially those that deviate from truth.
- Huda (الهدى): Guidance, i.e., the clear truth revealed by Allah.
Tafsir (Explanation):
These idols that you worship, O polytheists, are nothing but empty names—mere labels that you and your forefathers invented out of your own imaginations. They possess no divinity, no power to benefit or harm, and no share in the attributes of Allah. You have given them these names—calling them gods—without any authority from Allah. He has sent down no proof or evidence to support your claim.
Those who worship them follow nothing but baseless conjecture and the corrupt desires of their own souls, which have been beautified by Satan. They have turned away from sound natural disposition (fitrah) and rational thinking. Yet, the truth has not been hidden from them: Allah sent them clear guidance through His Messenger (peace be upon him), calling them to worship Him alone. The guidance came to them, but they refused to benefit from it, clinging instead to their false assumptions and whims.
Da’wah Reflection:
How merciful is our Lord! He did not leave humanity in darkness. He sent messengers, revealed books, and provided clear signs—all so that we may know the truth and be saved from falsehood. The idols of the past were empty names, and so are every false object of worship today: wealth, status, desires, or any being that is taken as a god besides Allah. Yet Allah, in His infinite love, has given us the Qur’an and the Sunnah as a guiding light. He calls us to free ourselves from the chains of conjecture and desire, and to submit to the One who truly deserves our worship. Will you not respond to this call? Will you not prefer certainty over doubt, and truth over illusion? The door of guidance is open, and the path is clear—take hold of it before it is too late, and let your heart find peace in the remembrance of the One who created you and knows what is best for you.
