Surah An-Najm — Verse 24

The Interpretation:

This verse strikes at the heart of a delusion that lingers in the human soul — the illusion that one can simply wish for something and have it granted, without any basis in truth or reality. The disbelievers of Makkah harbored the hope that their idols, which they worshipped besides Allah, would intercede for them on the Day of Judgment, bringing them closer to Allah and securing their salvation. They also wished for worldly gains and the fulfillment of their whims, believing that their false deities could deliver all of this to them.

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, poses a rhetorical question that demolishes this false notion: "Or is it that the human being shall have whatever he wishes?" The answer is an emphatic "No!" — for it is not by mere wishing or hoping that one attains what he desires. Rather, the affairs of this world and the Hereafter belong entirely to Allah alone. He grants and withholds, He honors and humiliates, and He accepts intercession only for whom He wills and from whom He approves — and that intercession is granted only to those who worship Him sincerely and follow His guidance.

The verse serves as a profound reminder that the path to success is not paved with empty wishes, but with sincere faith, righteous deeds, and submission to the will of Allah. The disbeliever's hope in the intercession of idols is nothing but a mirage — a fantasy that will vanish on the Day when every soul shall be recompensed for what it has earned.

Dear reader, pause and reflect upon your own hopes and aspirations. Do you place your trust in created beings, in wealth, in status, or in fleeting desires? Or do you anchor your hopes in the One who controls all affairs — the Almighty Allah, who hears every prayer and responds to every sincere call? The Qur'an teaches us that true success lies not in what we wish for, but in what we earn through faith and obedience. So turn your heart to Allah, purify your intentions, and know that He — and He alone — holds the keys to all that you desire. Indeed, He is the Most Generous, the Most Merciful, and He loves those who call upon Him with sincerity and hope.
