Key Terms:

  • Al-Hawā (الهوى): Personal desire, whim, or caprice—the inclination of the soul toward what it lusts for or finds pleasing, without regard for truth or right.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse comes as part of a powerful oath in which Allah, the Exalted, swears by the stars as they set and disappear, affirming the absolute truthfulness and integrity of His Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him). The verse declares: *"Nor does he speak from [his own] desire."*

This means that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not utter a single word—whether in matters of religion, guidance, or judgment—out of his own personal whim or inclination. Rather, every word he spoke in conveying the Qur'an and explaining the Sunnah was pure revelation from Allah. He was neither misguided nor did he stray from the path of truth; he was in complete balance, uprightness, and soundness of speech and action.

The verse emphasizes that the Prophet's speech was not the product of his own mind, culture, or personal preference—nor was it influenced by tribal loyalties, worldly gain, or the pressures of his society. Instead, it was entirely inspired and dictated by divine will. This is a profound testimony to the divine origin of the Qur'an and the prophetic tradition, and it reassures believers that every command, prohibition, and piece of guidance brought by the Messenger is rooted in divine wisdom, not human caprice.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse invites every sincere seeker of truth to reflect: if the Prophet (peace be upon him)—who was known among his people as "Al-Amin" (the trustworthy) and "As-Sadiq" (the truthful) even before his prophethood—did not speak from desire, then how can we, as his followers, allow our own desires to dictate our understanding of religion? The Qur'an and the Sunnah are our unshakable foundation, free from human error and personal bias. Let this verse strengthen your trust in the divine message, and let it remind you that true success lies in submitting your will to Allah's guidance, just as the Prophet submitted his entire being to his Lord. Indeed, in following him, we find the path to peace, justice, and eternal salvation.
