Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Amāta (أَمَاتَ): He caused death — He takes away life from the living.
  • Aḥyā (أَحْيَا): He gave life — He brings the dead back to life.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse declares a profound truth: it is Allah alone who causes death and grants life. He is the One who takes the souls of the living at the appointed time of their death in this world, and He is the One who will resurrect all creation from their graves on the Day of Judgment. No one else possesses this power — not any prophet, king, or any created being. Life and death are entirely in His hands, and He does with His creation as He wills. He gives life to the lifeless, and He causes death to those who are alive, with no partner or associate in this authority. This is a direct affirmation of His absolute sovereignty and a reminder that all affairs return to Him alone.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this magnificent reality. Every breath you take is a gift from Allah, and every moment of your existence is sustained by His will. The One who gave you life from nothing is the same One who will take it back and then bring you forth again for the final reckoning. This truth should fill your heart with humility and gratitude — humility knowing that your life is not your own, and gratitude for every heartbeat He grants you. It should also awaken in you a sense of purpose: since your life is in His hands, live it in obedience to Him. Seek His pleasure in every action, for the One who created you and will resurrect you is worthy of your worship and devotion. Let this verse strengthen your faith in the Hereafter, for the same power that brought you into existence is fully capable of bringing you back. Submit to Him, trust in Him, and prepare for the day when you will stand before Him — for He is the Master of life and death, and to Him alone belongs the final return.
