Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أَضْحَكَ (Adhaka): He made (someone) laugh — i.e., He caused joy and happiness.
  • أَبْكَى (Abka): He made (someone) weep — i.e., He caused sorrow and grief.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares that He alone is the One who causes laughter and weeping. He is the Sole Creator of all emotions and states of the heart. Whoever He wills to be happy and joyful, He grants them reasons for delight, and they laugh. And whoever He wills to be sad and distressed, He brings upon them circumstances that lead to tears and weeping. This is not a random act, but part of His perfect wisdom and absolute sovereignty over all creation.

Laughter and weeping are mentioned specifically because they are two comprehensive states that gather within them countless other human conditions. Laughter is the visible sign of inner joy and contentment, while weeping is the outward expression of grief and hardship. These two states encompass the spectrum of human experience in this world and the Hereafter — for in Paradise, the believers will laugh in eternal bliss, and in Hell, the disbelievers will weep in endless torment.

This verse reminds us that every smile we share and every tear we shed is under Allah’s complete control. He is the One who turns sorrow into joy and joy into sorrow, and no one can prevent what He has decreed or bring what He has withheld. So when you find yourself laughing, thank Him for His blessings; and when you weep, turn to Him in patience and supplication, for He is the One who holds the keys to both hearts and destinies. This profound truth should draw you closer to your Lord, filling your heart with trust in His wisdom and gratitude for His mercy — for He does not decree anything except with perfect purpose and profound love for His servants.
