Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Qawm Nūḥ (قَوْمَ نُوحٍ): The people of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him).
  • Min qabl (مِن قَبْلُ): Before, i.e., before the destruction of ʿĀd and Thamūd.
  • Aẓlam (أَظْلَم): More unjust, more oppressive in their wrongdoing.
  • Aṭghā (أَطْغَى): More rebellious, more arrogant in transgression against Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Exalted be He) continues to recount His punishment of the disbelieving nations of the past, as a warning to those who reject the truth. After mentioning the destruction of ʿĀd (the people of Prophet Hūd) and Thamūd (the people of Prophet Ṣāliḥ), Allah now mentions the people of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him), saying that He destroyed them before those nations.

The people of Noah were not merely like any other disbelieving nation—they were the most severe in injustice and the most extreme in tyranny. Their transgression was unparalleled because Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) called them to the worship of Allah alone for 950 years—a period far longer than any other prophet spent with his people. Yet, despite this extraordinary patience and relentless preaching, they persisted in their arrogance, rejected his message, and even mocked him. They oppressed themselves by denying the clear signs of Allah and tyrannized others by leading them astray and threatening those who believed.

Their punishment was the great flood that drowned them all, as a divine decree of justice. This verse serves as a profound lesson: no matter how long the truth is delayed, the justice of Allah is certain. The people of Noah had every opportunity to believe, yet their hearts were sealed with pride and stubbornness, making them the ultimate example of transgression.

A Daʿwah Reflection for the Reader:

This verse carries a timeless message for every soul: the mercy of Allah is vast, and His patience is immense—but His justice is equally inevitable. Prophet Noah’s story teaches us that Allah gives people ample time to return to Him, but when they persist in arrogance, His punishment is decisive.

For us today, this is a call to humility and swift repentance. Do not let pride or stubbornness keep you away from the truth. The door of repentance is open, and Allah’s mercy is nearer than you think. But do not delay, for no one knows when the final moment will come. Embrace faith with a sincere heart, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next. The example of Noah’s people stands as a beacon of warning—while the example of Noah’s believers stands as a beacon of hope: those who held firm to their faith, even when they were few, were saved by Allah’s grace. Be among the saved, not among the drowned.
