Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mutrafīn (مُتْرَفِينَ): Those who were given over to luxury and extravagance; people who lived a life of ease and indulgence, consumed by their desires and oblivious to higher purposes.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse reveals a profound truth about the fate of the wicked on the Day of Judgment. It tells us that these people—who are now facing the terrible consequences of their deeds—were, in their previous life on earth, living in a state of *mutrafīn*. They were immersed in luxury and comfort, indulging in their desires without restraint. Their hearts were so preoccupied with worldly pleasures that they turned away from the messages brought by the prophets. They had no concern beyond satisfying their appetites and whims, and they neglected the remembrance of Allah and the purpose of their existence.
This state of extravagance and heedlessness blinded them. Instead of using their blessings to draw closer to their Creator and help others, they used them to feed their arrogance and disobedience. Their comfort became a veil, and their plenty became a punishment in disguise—because it led them to forget the Hereafter entirely.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse is a gentle but powerful reminder for all of us. The blessings of wealth, health, and comfort are not guarantees of salvation; rather, they are tests. Will we use them to thank Allah, to worship Him, and to serve His creation? Or will we let them lull us into a false sense of security, chasing only our desires? The Qur'an teaches us that true success lies not in the abundance of worldly goods, but in the purity of our hearts and the righteousness of our actions. Let us not be among those who are "mutrafīn" in the negative sense—so absorbed in pleasure that we forget the One who gave us everything. Instead, let every blessing remind us of the Giver, and let every moment be an opportunity to earn His pleasure and His eternal Paradise. For the life of this world is fleeting, but the Hereafter is everlasting—and that is where we must invest our true efforts.
