Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yusirrūna (يُصِرُّونَ): They persisted, insisted, or remained firmly determined upon something without wavering.
  • Al-Hinth (الْحِنثِ): A grave sin, transgression, or wrongdoing—specifically referring to major disobedience and deviation from the truth.
  • Al-ʿAẓīm (الْعَظِيمِ): The tremendous, immense, or severe—emphasizing the magnitude of the sin committed.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes the state of the wicked people who are being punished in the Hereafter, and it reveals a key trait of their character in this worldly life: they persisted stubbornly upon the greatest of sins. They did not merely stumble into error or commit a mistake once—rather, they made a firm and continuous decision to remain upon disbelief in Allah, associating partners with Him in worship, and disobeying His commands. They refused to turn back in repentance, even when the truth was made clear to them. Their hearts were hardened, and their arrogance prevented them from submitting to their Lord. The "tremendous sin" here refers primarily to shirk—the act of worshipping other deities alongside Allah—which is the ultimate injustice and the only sin Allah has promised not to forgive if one dies upon it. This persistence was not a passive state; it was an active, deliberate choice to reject guidance and cling to falsehood.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this powerful description. These people were not punished merely for sinning—they were punished for insisting upon sin and refusing to seek forgiveness. How different is the state of a believer who stumbles, feels remorse, and rushes back to Allah in sincere repentance! Allah loves those who turn to Him, and His door of mercy is open day and night. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every son of Adam sins, and the best of those who sin are those who repent." Do not let pride or procrastination keep you trapped in a cycle of disobedience. Break the chains of persistence by making a firm resolve to leave every sin, especially the greatest of them—associating partners with Allah. Embrace the pure worship of Allah alone, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next. The Qur'an is a mercy and a guide; let it soften your heart and lead you to the straight path before the day comes when no soul can intercede for another, and every person will face the consequences of what they persisted upon.

📜 Verse 44-48 — Al-Waqi'ah

44لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
Neither cool nor beneficial.
45إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,
46وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنثِ الْعَظِيمِ
And they used to persist in the great violation,
47وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
48أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ
And our forefathers [as well]?"
