Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), if the rejection and turning away of your people weighs heavily upon your noble heart—and indeed it does, for you are a mercy to all creation and yearn for their salvation—then know that even if you were able to dig a tunnel into the earth or climb a ladder into the heavens to bring them a miracle of your own choosing, you would still not be able to force faith into their hearts. Even if you could produce every conceivable sign, guidance is not in your hands; it is solely in the Hands of Allah.
Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, could have compelled every single person to believe, gathering all of humanity upon the path of guidance by sheer force of will. But He did not do so—not out of weakness, but out of divine wisdom. He created humans with free will so that their faith would be a choice, not a compulsion, and so that the righteous would be distinguished from the wicked. Faith that is forced is no faith at all; it is mere submission to overpowering force. The beauty of Islam is that it invites, not compels; it calls, not coerces.
Therefore, O Messenger, do not grieve yourself to the point of destruction over those who refuse to believe. Do not let sorrow for their disbelief consume you, for that would be the way of the ignorant—those who do not fully comprehend Allah's wisdom and decree. The Prophet (peace be upon him) loved his people intensely and wished for their guidance more than anything, yet he was reminded that his duty was only to convey the message clearly, not to guarantee the outcome.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer and caller to Islam: we are responsible for delivering the truth with wisdom and beautiful preaching, but we are not responsible for the results. Allah alone guides whom He wills, and He alone misguides whom He wills, according to His perfect wisdom. So let your heart find peace in this divine decree, and continue your mission with patience, compassion, and unwavering trust in Allah's plan.
And what a beautiful religion this is—one that balances sincere effort with complete reliance on Allah, one that combines passionate concern for others with serene acceptance of divine will. This is the path of the Prophets, and it is the path of every true believer who calls others to goodness. Let us not become overwhelmed by the rejection we face, but rather let us persist in kindness, wisdom, and beautiful invitation, knowing that our reward is with Allah, and that He is the Best of Planners.
