Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kadhdhaba (كَذَّبَ): Denied, rejected, or belied.
- Qawmuka (قَوْمُكَ): Your people — referring to the Quraysh, the Prophet’s ﷺ own tribe.
- Al-Haqq (الْحَقُّ): The absolute truth, the certain reality that cannot be doubted.
- Wakīl (وَكِيل): A guardian, overseer, or one entrusted with authority over others to compel them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet ﷺ, your own people — the Quraysh — have rejected this Qur’an, even though it is the undeniable truth that has come from your Lord. It is the speech of Allah, free from falsehood, guiding to every good and warning against every evil. Yet, despite its clarity and perfection, they turned away in denial.
Allah commands you to respond to them with a message of mercy and clarity: “Say: I am not a guardian over you.” This means: I have not been sent to force you into faith, nor to watch over your deeds and hold you accountable for them. My duty is only to convey the message clearly and to warn you of the consequences of disbelief. The One who takes you to account is Allah alone, and to Him is the return of all matters.
This verse carries a profound lesson: the Prophet ﷺ was not responsible for the choices of his people, nor was he tasked with compelling them. His mission was one of gentle invitation and sincere warning — a model for every believer who calls others to the truth. The guidance of hearts is in Allah’s Hands alone.
A Da’wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in teaching us the balance of da’wah! The Prophet ﷺ faced rejection from his own kin, yet he was not overcome by grief or despair. Instead, he was reminded that his role is to deliver, not to control. This is a source of comfort for every Muslim who strives to share Islam: you are not responsible for the outcome, only for the sincerity of your effort. Your duty is to speak the truth with wisdom and kindness, and to leave the rest to Allah.
And how reassuring it is to know that the Qur’an — this book of guidance — is the truth that will remain forever, regardless of who rejects it. Its light will never dim, and its message will never fade. So hold fast to it, and let it be your companion, for it is the ultimate proof of Allah’s mercy to humanity.
