Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Janna" (جَنَّ): The darkness of the night covered and enveloped everything.
- "Kawkaban" (كَوْكَبًا): A star or celestial body.
- "Afala" (أَفَلَ): To set, disappear, or vanish from sight (as celestial bodies do at their horizon).
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the night grew dark and covered Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) with its deep shadows, he began a profound intellectual dialogue with his people—a people who worshipped celestial bodies like stars, the moon, and the sun. He sought to demonstrate, through their own logic, the futility of their beliefs and to guide them toward the worship of the One True God, who is eternal and ever-present.
He saw a brilliant star shining in the sky, and he said—in a manner of gentle persuasion and gradual reasoning—"This is my Lord." He did not say this out of genuine belief, but as a strategic approach to engage his people and lead them to the truth. He wanted them to reflect: if this star is truly a god, then let us see what it does.
Then, as the star set and disappeared from the horizon, he seized the moment and declared: "I do not love those that set." With this simple yet powerful statement, he established a fundamental principle: the true Lord cannot be subject to disappearance, change, or impermanence. A deity that vanishes, that is bound by time and space, cannot be the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. The true God is always present, always watching, and never absent.
This was the beginning of Ibrahim's journey—a journey of pure intellect and sincere heart—to prove the oneness of Allah. He did not stop here; he continued to examine the moon and the sun, each time reaching the same conclusion: none of these created things deserve worship. Only Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, who never sets and never fades, is worthy of our devotion.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this story. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was not merely debating; he was inviting his people to use their minds, to observe the world around them, and to recognize the signs of Allah. The universe, with all its wonders, points to a Creator who is above all imperfections. Just as Ibrahim rejected the worship of that which sets and disappears, we too must reject all false gods—whether they be idols, desires, wealth, or power—that are transient and fleeting.
Let this beautiful story inspire you to strengthen your connection with Allah, the One who never leaves you, who is always near, and who answers the call of those who turn to Him. Embrace the pure monotheism that Ibrahim preached, for it is the essence of Islam and the key to eternal success. May Allah guide us all to the straight path, just as He guided His beloved prophet Ibrahim.
