Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ighdū (اغْدُوا): Go out early in the morning, at dawn or daybreak.
- Ḥarth (حَرْث): Cultivated land, orchard, or farm — here specifically referring to their date-palm garden.
- Ṣārimīn (صَارِمِينَ): Those determined to cut and harvest the ripe fruit.
Explanation of the Verse:
At the break of dawn, these owners of the garden — who had secretly plotted to deprive the poor and needy of their share — called out to one another, saying: "Go out early to your farm if you are truly resolved to cut and gather the harvest." They urged each other to hasten before the poor could arrive, hoping to reap the fruits of their labor in secrecy and avoid giving what Allah had commanded them to give. Their words revealed their hardened hearts and their selfish determination, as they conspired to keep the blessings entirely for themselves, forgetting that all provision comes from Allah and that He has placed a due right of the needy in their wealth.
Reflection and Lesson:
This verse paints a vivid picture of human greed and the illusion of control. These people believed that by rushing at dawn, they could outsmart the divine decree and secure their harvest without sharing. Yet, as the following verses reveal, their plan was utterly destroyed by Allah's will — a powerful reminder that no scheme, no early morning rush, and no clever planning can ever overcome the command of the Almighty.
Dear reader, pause and reflect: How often do we, too, rush through our days, clutching our wealth and time, thinking we can secure our future by our own efforts alone? The Qur'an invites us to a higher way — a life of gratitude, generosity, and trust in Allah. When we give freely from what He has granted us, we do not lose; rather, we are blessed, purified, and protected. The garden owners lost everything because they withheld what was rightfully due to others. But the believer who opens their hand in charity finds that Allah opens for them doors of provision and peace beyond imagination. Let this verse be a gentle call to examine your own heart: Are you holding back what Allah has asked you to share? Or are you among those who rush, not to hoard, but to give — knowing that true success lies in pleasing your Lord?
