Word Meanings:
- فَانطَلَقُوا (fa-nṭalaqū): They set out, departed, or went forth.
- يَتَخَافَتُونَ (yatakhāfatūn): They speak in very low, hushed voices; they whisper secretly to one another, keeping their conversation concealed.
Explanation of the Verse:
After the owners of the garden had made their firm resolve to harvest its fruits early in the morning while keeping the poor and needy away, they set out at dawn, walking with urgency toward their land. As they moved, they engaged in hushed, secretive conversation among themselves. Their whispers were filled with cunning plans and mutual encouragement, saying to one another: "Do not allow any poor person to enter the garden today, and make sure no one shares in what we have." They spoke in subdued tones, careful that no outsider might overhear their scheme, as if their lowered voices could somehow shield their unjust intention from the sight of Allah. Their steps were quick, their hearts filled with greed, and their words were but echoes of their selfishness — yet all the while, they were unaware that the All-Hearing, All-Seeing Lord was fully aware of every whispered word and every hidden thought.
A Call to Reflection:
This brief yet profound scene invites every believer to pause and examine their own heart. Notice how these people, in their worldly cunning, thought they could conceal their plans by lowering their voices — as if the Creator of voices and whispers could be deceived. How often do we, too, act as though Allah does not see or hear? We may whisper our schemes, hide our intentions, and speak in hushed tones, forgetting that nothing is hidden from Him. The Qur'an reminds us in another verse: *"He knows the secret and what is even more hidden"* (20:7).
This verse also teaches us a beautiful lesson about the value of sincerity and transparency. When your intention is pure, you have nothing to hide; when your deeds are righteous, you can speak openly. The believers are called to be people of honesty, whose words match their hearts, and whose actions are done for Allah alone — not for show, not for greed, and never at the expense of the weak. Let this scene be a mirror for your soul: if your plans are good, speak them boldly; if they are not, then know that even your faintest whisper is recorded, and the Bestower of Justice will never let a single wrong go unanswered. Turn to Allah with a pure heart, and He will bless your efforts beyond what you can imagine.
