Word Meanings:

  • Tanādaw (تَنَادَوْا): They called out to one another, summoning each other.
  • Muṣbiḥīn (مُصْبِحِينَ): Entering the morning time, i.e., at dawn or early daylight.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the owners of the garden had secretly plotted to harvest its fruits before dawn, so that no poor or needy person could come and share in it, they woke up at the break of morning and began calling out to one another. Their voices echoed through the early light, each one urging the other to hurry to the field, determined to carry out their selfish plan. This was not a call of kindness or cooperation for a noble cause, but a summons driven by greed and the desire to deprive others of what Allah had provided. They thought they could outsmart the divine decree by sneaking in the dark, yet their very haste and secrecy revealed the corruption in their hearts. Their mutual calling at that early hour was the first step toward the trial that awaited them, for Allah had already decreed that their scheme would fail, and their garden would be turned into a barren, burnt wasteland overnight.

Reflection and Counsel:

This verse paints a vivid picture of human greed and the illusion of control. These people believed that by rising early and coordinating their efforts, they could secure their wealth and exclude the needy from their blessings. But how often do we, too, plan and strive, thinking our cleverness will guarantee success, while forgetting that the true Provider is Allah alone? The Qur'an invites us to pause and reflect: every blessing we own—our health, our wealth, our time—is a trust from Him, and within it lies a right for others. When we close our hands to the poor, we close the doors of mercy upon ourselves. Yet Allah, in His infinite compassion, does not abandon us; He sends gentle reminders, like this story, to awaken our hearts before it is too late. Let this be a call to you, dear reader, to examine your own intentions. Do you rush through your days, consumed by your own plans, or do you pause to remember that the morning light you wake to is itself a gift from the Most Merciful? Open your heart to generosity, for the one who gives for the sake of Allah never truly loses, and the one who withholds only deprives himself of the barakah (blessing) that transforms a simple garden into a source of endless peace.

📜 Verse 19-23 — Al-Qalam

19فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ
So there came upon the garden an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.
20فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ
And it became as though reaped.
21فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ
And they called one another at morning,
22أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَارِمِينَ
[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."
23فَانطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ
So they set out, while lowering their voices,
