Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Wa lam adri" — "And I did not know" — expressing utter ignorance and bewilderment.
  • "Ma hisabiyah" — "What my account is" — referring to the reckoning of one's deeds.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the lament of the one who receives his book of deeds in his left hand on the Day of Judgment. After crying out, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my book!" he adds in utter despair and confusion: "And I did not know what my account was."

This is a cry of complete bewilderment — he realizes that he never truly understood the gravity of the reckoning that awaited him. In his worldly life, he was heedless of the consequences of his actions. He never reflected on the fact that every deed, word, and thought would be weighed and accounted for. Now, standing before the reality of that account, he is struck with the painful awareness that he lived his life in ignorance and negligence — an ignorance that now brings him nothing but regret and sorrow.

The repetition of this lament highlights the depth of his remorse. It is not merely that he is being punished; it is that he now sees clearly what he failed to see before — that his entire life was spent without true understanding of his purpose and his ultimate return to Allah.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse serves as a profound reminder for every soul that still has the opportunity to wake up. The one who regrets on that Day wishes he had understood the reality of the account while he still had time to prepare for it. Today, you are alive — you can still open the Book of Allah, reflect on His verses, and mend your ways. Do not wait until the moment when knowledge becomes useless and regret becomes eternal. The Qur'an was sent down precisely so that you would not be among those who say, "I did not know." Let this verse be a wake-up call: know your Lord now, know His commands now, and know that every moment of your life is being recorded. The door of repentance is open — seize it before the door of return is shut forever.
