Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- مَا أَغْنَى: "What did not avail" or "did not benefit in the least" — a negation indicating that something was utterly useless.
- عَنِّي: "From me" or "against me" — meaning it could not repel or protect.
- مَالِيَهْ: "My wealth" — the possessions, riches, and resources one accumulated in worldly life. The extra "ه" (hā' al-sakt) at the end is for pausing, emphasizing the speaker's regret.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, when the one who receives his record in his left hand is confronted with the terrifying reality of his deeds, he cries out in utter regret and despair. Among the things he laments is his wealth — the very thing he once prided himself on, spent his life gathering, and perhaps even used to feel secure and powerful. Now, in that moment of absolute need, he realizes that his money, his properties, his investments, and all his worldly gains cannot protect him from the punishment of Allah. It cannot buy him freedom, cannot shield him from the Fire, and cannot even lighten the burden of his sins for a single moment. The wealth that once seemed so mighty and reassuring has become utterly worthless — it cannot repel the divine justice, nor can it ransom his soul. This is the painful awakening of a soul that placed its trust in the material world, only to find that the material world abandons it at the very moment it needs help the most.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. The wealth that we chase so tirelessly, the money we hoard, the luxuries we sacrifice our time, health, and even our relationships for — will it truly stand by us when we need it most? On that Day, every coin we spent in the way of Allah will shine as a witness for us, but every coin we hoarded for selfish gain will become a source of regret. The Qur'an teaches us that wealth is not inherently evil; it is a trust from Allah. What matters is how we earn it, how we spend it, and what we place in our hearts. If we use our wealth to feed the hungry, support the orphans, build mosques, and spread goodness, it becomes a treasure that accompanies us into the Hereafter. But if we cling to it as if it were our god, it will betray us at the very threshold of eternity. Let this verse be a wake-up call: invest in what lasts forever — your faith, your good deeds, and your sincere charity. For the only wealth that will truly benefit you is that which you send forth for your eternal life. May Allah guide us all to be among those who use their blessings wisely and are not among the regretful on that Mighty Day.
