Key Words and Phrases:
- أَرْجِهْ (Arjih): Delay him, postpone his matter, or hold him back — meaning, do not rush to execute him.
- وَأَخَاهُ (wa akhāh): And his brother — referring to Hārūn (Aaron), peace be upon him.
- حَاشِرِينَ (ḥāshirīn): Gatherers — i.e., those who gather and summon people, specifically the skilled magicians from across the land.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse captures a critical moment in the confrontation between Prophet Mūsā (Moses), peace be upon him, and Pharaoh. When Mūsā performed his miracles — the staff turning into a serpent and his hand shining white — the elite advisors and chiefs of Pharaoh's court, who were present at the debate, were taken aback. Yet instead of submitting to the truth, they resorted to a cunning plan to preserve their power and status.
They said to Pharaoh: "Do not rush to punish Mūsā or kill him. Delay his matter and that of his brother Hārūn. Do not engage with them now. Instead, send messengers and officers to all the cities and districts of Egypt to gather every skilled and powerful magician from every corner of the land. Then, when they are assembled, we will hold a grand public contest between Mūsā and the magicians. If our magicians prevail — as we expect — we will expose Mūsā as a mere sorcerer and discredit him before the people."
This was a calculated political and psychological maneuver. The advisors believed that by turning the confrontation into a public spectacle, they could control the narrative, rally public support, and crush Mūsā's influence. They were confident in the superiority of their magicians, unaware that the power of Allah, the Creator of all, far surpasses any human craft or illusion.
Reflection and Lesson:
This scene teaches us a profound truth: the enemies of truth often resort to delaying tactics, gathering resources, and staging grand shows to fight the message of Allah. But their plans are always within Allah's knowledge and power. The believers should never fear the size of the opposition or the sophistication of their schemes. Allah's promise is true — His help comes to those who are patient and steadfast. Just as the magicians of Pharaoh eventually fell prostrate in faith when they witnessed the undeniable truth of Mūsā's miracle, so too will falsehood always be vanquished before the light of truth.
This story also reminds us of the importance of unity and brotherhood — Mūsā and Hārūn stood together as brothers in faith and prophecy, supporting one another in the face of tyranny. Let us hold fast to our brothers and sisters in Islam, for together, with Allah's guidance, no force on earth can overcome us.
