Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sāḥir (سَاحِر): A sorcerer or magician — one who practices magic.
- ʿAlīm (عَلِيم): Deeply knowledgeable and highly skilled — here, specifically referring to one who is an expert and master in the art of magic.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, we see the courtiers of Pharaoh responding to his command. When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) confronted Pharaoh with the truth and demonstrated clear miracles by the permission of Allah, Pharaoh was enraged and sought to counter this divine proof with human trickery. He asked his advisors, "What do you command?" and they replied by advising him to gather the most skilled sorcerers from across his entire kingdom.
The verse tells us that these advisors said: *"They will bring you every learned sorcerer"* — meaning, we will send messengers to every city and region under your rule to collect the most accomplished and cunning magicians, those who have mastered the art of illusion and deception to its highest degree. These were not ordinary performers, but masters of their craft, experts who could manipulate perception and create illusions that would bewilder the masses.
This was a calculated plan to defeat Musa (peace be upon him) on what they perceived as his own battlefield — the field of supernatural displays. They thought that by gathering the best of their magicians, they could match or even surpass the miracles that Allah had granted to His prophet. Little did they know that the power of Allah far exceeds any human skill, and that no amount of earthly expertise can stand against the will of the Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This scene carries a profound lesson for us as believers. The forces of falsehood, no matter how powerful, organized, or "expert" they may appear, are ultimately doomed to fail against the truth of Allah. Pharaoh assembled the finest magicians his empire could offer — yet when the staff of Musa turned into a living serpent by Allah's command, their illusions collapsed like a house of cards, and the magicians themselves fell prostrate in faith, declaring their belief in the Lord of Musa and Harun.
Dear reader, whenever you face challenges in your life — whether they come in the form of people who mock your faith, systems that oppose justice, or trials that test your patience — remember that Allah's power is above all. The most elaborate schemes of humanity are but shadows compared to the light of divine truth. Place your trust in Allah, hold firmly to His guidance, and know that He is the Best of Planners. The same Allah who humiliated Pharaoh and his sorcerers is with you today, hearing your prayers and seeing your struggles. Turn to Him, and He will never abandon you.
