Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • وَأُلْقِيَ (wa-ulqiya): They were thrown down or fell suddenly, indicating a swift and involuntary prostration.
  • السَّحَرَةُ (al-saharatu): The magicians (who had gathered to compete against Prophet Musa, peace be upon him).
  • سَاجِدِينَ (sajideen): Prostrating, falling on their faces in humble submission.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this powerful verse, Allah describes the moment when the magicians of Pharaoh, who had come to defeat Musa (peace be upon him) with their illusions, witnessed the undeniable truth of Allah's power. When Musa's staff swallowed their fabricated tricks, their hearts were illuminated, and their arrogance dissolved. They did not merely bow—they were "thrown down" into prostration, a sudden and overwhelming surrender to the Almighty. This was not a calculated act but an instinctive, overwhelming response to the manifest truth they had just witnessed.

Their prostration was not to Musa, but to the Lord of the worlds—the Creator of all things. In that single moment, their entire worldview shattered, and they recognized that what they had seen was no mere magic but a divine miracle beyond human capability. Their faith was so immediate and sincere that they declared their belief in the God of Musa and Harun, as mentioned in the following verses.

This scene teaches us a profound lesson: when the truth becomes clear, the sincere heart does not hesitate to submit. The magicians, who had spent their lives mastering deception, became the most humble of believers in an instant. Their story is a testament that guidance is not limited to the learned or the pious—anyone who sincerely seeks the truth and opens their heart to Allah's signs will find their way, no matter their past.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look at these magicians—they were experts in illusion, yet when confronted with the ultimate Reality, they fell in prostration without delay. How often do we, who claim to believe, hesitate to submit to Allah's commands? Let this scene inspire you to respond to the truth with the same urgency and humility. When you witness the signs of Allah in the universe, in the Qur'an, or in your own life, do not let pride or habit hold you back. Fall before your Creator, for in that surrender lies true peace and honor. The magicians lost their worldly status but gained eternal salvation—what a beautiful trade!
