Word Meanings:

  • Dhikr (ذِكْر): A reminder, admonition, or message that brings to mind what is beneficial and warns against what is harmful.
  • Min Rabbikum (مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ): From your Lord — emphasizing the divine origin and authority of the message.
  • Ala Rajulin Minkum (عَلَىٰ رَجُلٍ مِّنكُمْ): Upon a man from among yourselves — a human being of your own kind, known to you, not a stranger or an angel.
  • Li Yunzirakum (لِيُنذِرَكُمْ): To warn you — to make you fear the consequences of disbelief and disobedience.
  • Litattaqu (وَلِتَتَّقُوا): So that you may attain God-consciousness (taqwa) — by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
  • La'allakum Turhamun (وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ): So that you may receive mercy — the ultimate goal of faith and righteousness.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the people of Prophet Hud (peace be upon him), who were astonished and bewildered that a divine reminder came to them through a man from their own community. Their amazement was not because the message was false, but because they found it strange that God would choose a human being — someone they knew well, whose lineage, honesty, and character were familiar to them — to deliver such a weighty revelation. They failed to realize that this was actually a great blessing and a sign of God's mercy: He sent them a messenger they could understand, relate to, and verify, rather than leaving them without guidance.

The verse gently rebukes their attitude: "Are you truly amazed that a reminder has come to you from your Lord through a man from among you?" This reminder was not a burden but a gift — a call to wake up from heedlessness and turn back to their Creator. The purpose of this message was threefold:

First, to warn them — to make them aware of the severe consequences of persisting in disbelief and disobedience. The warning was not meant to frighten them for its own sake, but to save them from destruction, just as a loving parent warns a child about a fire.

Second, to lead them to taqwa — to cultivate in their hearts a profound awareness of God, which would transform their lives. Taqwa means guarding oneself from sin out of love and reverence for God, and it is the key to every good in this world and the next.

Third, to attain mercy — for when a person believes, reforms their conduct, and lives in God-consciousness, they become deserving of God's boundless mercy, which encompasses forgiveness, guidance, provision, and ultimately, eternal bliss in Paradise.

The beauty of this verse lies in its gentle, compassionate tone. God does not immediately condemn them for their astonishment; rather, He explains the wisdom behind sending a human messenger. This teaches us a profound lesson: divine guidance always comes in a way that suits human nature. God does not leave people without direction, and He always provides the clearest path to salvation.

Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to appreciate the greatest blessing you have — the Qur'an itself, which is a living reminder from your Lord. Do not be like those who turned away in amazement and missed the opportunity of a lifetime. Instead, open your heart to this reminder, let it warn you, purify you, and lead you to the mercy that has no end. Every verse you read is an invitation from your Lord — will you answer it?

[Noah] said, "O my people, there is not error in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds."
I convey to you the messages of my Lord and advise you; and I know from Allah what you do not know.
Then do you wonder that there has come to you a reminder from your Lord through a man from among you, that he may warn you and that you may fear Allah so you might receive mercy."
But they denied him, so We saved him and those who were with him in the ship. And We drowned those who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a blind people.
And to the 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Then will you not fear Him?"
