Tafsir (Explanation):
The Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) addressed his people, the ‘Ād, who were astonished and incredulous that a human being like themselves had been chosen by Allah to deliver His message. He asked them, in a tone of gentle reproach: "Are you truly amazed that a reminder from your Lord has come to you through a man from among you, whose lineage, honesty, and character you know well, to warn you of Allah’s punishment and call you to His mercy?" This was not something strange or unprecedented—Allah has always sent His messengers from among their own people, so that they can understand them, relate to them, and have no excuse to reject their call.
Then Hūd reminded them of Allah’s abundant favors upon them, urging them to reflect and be grateful. He said: "Remember when Allah made you successors to the people of Nūh (Noah) after they were destroyed for their disbelief and transgression. He settled you in the land and gave you strength, power, and physical greatness—tall stature, mighty bodies, and firmness in creation. So remember the countless blessings of Allah upon you—His mercy, His provision, His protection—so that you may attain true success and prosperity in this life and the Hereafter."
The essence of the message is a call to gratitude and humility. When we recognize the favors of Allah, our hearts soften, our pride diminishes, and we become more receptive to the truth. The people of ‘Ād were blessed with power and might, yet they used these gifts to become arrogant and reject the message of monotheism. Hūd reminded them that their strength was not self-made but a gift from Allah—and that the same Allah who gave it could take it away.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of us: Do not be surprised when guidance comes to you through ordinary means, for Allah chooses whom He wills to carry His message. And do not let the blessings you enjoy make you forgetful of the One who granted them. Instead, let every blessing be a reason to draw closer to Allah, to obey Him, and to spread goodness—for true success lies not in power or wealth, but in the pleasure of Allah and the salvation of the soul.
Remember, dear reader: every breath you take, every strength you possess, every comfort you enjoy is from Allah alone. The more you reflect on His favors, the more your heart fills with love for Him—and that love is the key to everlasting success. Let us not be like those who, when blessed, became arrogant and lost everything. Rather, let us be among those who, when blessed, become more grateful, more humble, and more devoted to their Creator.
