Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَدْعُو – calls out to / summons
- أَدْبَرَ – turned away (from the truth and faith)
- تَوَلَّىٰ – turned his back (on obedience and righteousness)
Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse describes the terrifying reality of Hellfire: it calls out to those who turned away from the truth and rejected faith. This is not a mere metaphor—it is a literal, awe-inspiring reality. The Fire, by Allah’s command, recognizes its inhabitants and summons them by name, as Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) explained. It calls those who turned their backs on the message of Allah, who heard the call of truth but deliberately ignored it, and who distanced themselves from obedience to Allah and His Messenger.
This calling is a manifestation of divine justice: just as they turned away from Allah’s guidance in this world, the Fire now turns toward them, pulling them into its embrace. Some scholars interpret this "calling" as meaning that the Fire destroys and consumes them, for its heat and fury are so intense that it strips away the skin of the head and all limbs.
Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: the same Fire that is created from Allah’s wrath is given the ability to know and call its people. This shows us that nothing in creation is random—everything operates by Allah’s perfect command. The one who turns away from Allah in this life will find that even the Fire of the Hereafter knows him and seeks him out.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is a gentle yet firm reminder for every soul: where are you turning? Are you turning toward Allah, His Book, and His Messenger, or are you turning away? The Fire calls those who rejected the truth and abandoned obedience—but the gates of repentance are open right now, in this very moment. Allah, the Most Merciful, says: "Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Az-Zumar 39:53).
Do not let your heart be among those who turn away. Respond to the call of Allah today, before the Fire calls you tomorrow. The Qur'an is the light that guides, and Islam is the path of peace. Embrace it with a sincere heart, and you will find that the One who created the Fire also created Paradise—and He is calling you to it with even greater love and mercy.
