Surah Nuh — Verse 9

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) continues his heartfelt complaint and intimate conversation with his Lord, describing the lengths he went to in delivering the message of monotheism to his people. After mentioning that his persistent calls—both by night and by day—only increased them in flight and aversion, he now reveals the comprehensive and adaptive strategy he employed in his daʿwah (call to Allah).

He says: "Then, indeed, I proclaimed to them openly, and I confided to them in secret." This means that he did not limit himself to one method of invitation. At times, he raised his voice and called them to the truth in public gatherings, in the light of day, where all could hear and none could claim ignorance. At other times, he approached them individually, speaking softly and privately, one-on-one, in a gentle and intimate manner—perhaps to reach those who felt shy, stubborn, or resistant in public settings. This shows his profound wisdom and sincere concern: he left no stone unturned, no door unknocked, and no approach untried in his mission to guide his people.

This verse beautifully illustrates the prophetic methodology of daʿwah: a balance between open proclamation and private counsel, between firmness in truth and gentleness in approach.
