Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Jihāran (جِهَارًا): Openly, publicly, and audibly — calling them to the truth without any concealment or secrecy.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) had called his people secretly and privately, he then turned to a different approach. He says: "Then indeed, I called them openly and publicly." This means that after the period of quiet, individual invitations, he addressed them in the open — in gatherings, in their marketplaces, and in their public assemblies — raising his voice with the message of Tawḥīd (the Oneness of Allah) and calling them to abandon their idols and return to their Creator. This was a strategic shift in his da'wah methodology: first the whisper, then the loud call. He left no excuse for them, making the truth reach their ears in every possible way — privately, publicly, and in both gentle and firm tones.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson in patience and wisdom in calling others to the truth. Prophet Nūḥ did not give up when his private calls were rejected; instead, he adapted his method and tried another way. He combined gentleness with boldness, secrecy with openness — all for the sake of guiding his people. This is the spirit of a true caller to Allah: never despairing, always creative, and driven by sincere love for the people's salvation. Imagine the dedication of this noble Prophet — he spent centuries calling his people, alternating between private counsel and public proclamation, never once losing hope in Allah's mercy. This should inspire us today: whether we call our families, friends, or communities, we must use wisdom, vary our approaches, and remain steadfast. The success is not in the outcome, but in the sincere effort — for Allah says, "Upon you is only the delivery of the message, and upon Us is the reckoning." Let us, like Nūḥ, be tireless in our concern for others' guidance, and trust that Allah sees every effort we make in His cause.

📜 Verse 6-10 — Nuh

But my invitation increased them not except in flight.
And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, persisted, and were arrogant with [great] arrogance.
Then I invited them publicly.
Then I announced to them and [also] confided to them secretly
And said, 'Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.
