Word Meanings:
- "Wafutihat" (And was opened): meaning it was split and rent asunder.
- "Abwaban" (Doors/gates): multiple openings and passages.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, the sky—that vast, seemingly unbreakable canopy above us—will be split open, not merely cracked, but transformed into numerous gates and openings. These doors will be opened for the descent of the angels, who will pour down in ranks upon ranks to witness the final reckoning of all creation. The sky, which once stood as a solid, impenetrable ceiling over the earth, will yield and become like a structure with many doors, each one swinging open to fulfill the divine command.
This scene is one of the awe-inspiring signs of that Great Day—a day when the familiar order of the universe will be completely overturned. The heavens, which have remained steadfast since their creation, will suddenly be rent apart, and the angels will descend through these openings like a flood, carrying out the commands of their Lord. It is a moment of utter transformation, where everything we know gives way to the reality of the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, imagine that moment when the sky above you—the same sky you look at every day, under which you live, work, and sleep—will be torn open like doors flung wide. This is not a distant myth; it is a certain reality that awaits every one of us. The Quran describes it so vividly that you can almost see it: the heavens opening, the angels descending, and every soul standing before its Creator.
This verse invites you to pause and think: if the sky itself—that mighty, vast creation—cannot withstand the command of Allah on that Day, then how can any of us afford to be heedless? The doors of the sky will open, and with them, the doors of accountability will swing wide. No one will be left unaware, no deed will remain hidden, and no soul will escape the justice of the Most Just.
Let this image soften your heart and awaken your consciousness. The same Allah who will command the sky to split open is the One who calls you today, through His Book, to return to Him. The doors of repentance are open now, before that Day arrives when the doors of the sky will open and no more chances will remain. Seize this moment, turn to your Lord, and let the thought of that Great Day guide you to a life of righteousness and peace. For on that Day, the believers will pass through those very gates with honor, while the heedless will wish they had taken this message to heart.
