Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mihād (مِهَادًا): A bed, cradle, or resting place that is spread out and made smooth for comfort and ease.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Exalted, addresses humanity with a rhetorical question that stirs the heart and awakens the mind: "Did We not make the earth a resting place?" This is not a question of uncertainty, but a call to reflect—a gentle reminder of His boundless mercy and power. He has spread out the earth beneath you like a soft bed, flattened and prepared for your settlement, your movement, and your life upon it. It is a cradle for you, just as a mother prepares a cradle for her infant—smooth, safe, and suited to your needs.
This verse comes in the context of affirming the Hereafter and the resurrection. By pointing to the earth’s creation and its perfect suitability for human life, Allah draws your attention to His absolute ability to recreate you after death. The One who made this vast earth a stable and comfortable dwelling for you—who leveled its mountains, opened its valleys, and provided its resources—is certainly capable of bringing you back to life for the Day of Judgment.
A Call to Reflection:
Pause and look around you. The ground you walk on, the soil that grows your food, the solid surface that supports your homes—all of it is a gift from your Lord, prepared with precision and love. This is not a random accident; it is a sign of a Wise and Merciful Creator who cares for His creation. When you realize that the earth itself is a proof of Allah’s power and care, your heart fills with gratitude, and your faith in the Hereafter grows stronger. If He could spread this earth as a cradle for you without any effort, then He can surely raise you from your graves and hold you to account with perfect justice. Let this verse be a source of comfort and hope: the same Lord who prepared your earthly home will prepare a home for you in the Hereafter—if you strive for His pleasure. So, turn to Him, thank Him for His blessings, and prepare for the meeting with Him.
