Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Jibāl (الْجِبَالَ): The mountains, the towering landforms that rise above the earth's surface.
  • Awtād (أَوْتَادًا): Pegs or stakes—like the tent pegs used to anchor a structure firmly to the ground, preventing it from shaking or collapsing.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah draws our attention to a magnificent sign of His power and wisdom: the mountains. He tells us that He made them as "pegs" (awtād) for the earth. Just as a tent is held steady by stakes driven into the ground, so too are the mountains firmly rooted in the earth, stabilizing it and preventing it from swaying or trembling beneath our feet. This is not a mere poetic image—it is a profound reality that modern science has come to understand. Mountains have deep roots that extend far into the earth's crust, acting as stabilizers that keep the planet's surface balanced and secure. Without them, the earth would be in constant upheaval, making life as we know it impossible.

This verse is a call to reflect: Who but the All-Wise Creator could have placed these massive, immovable structures to serve as the earth's anchors? The mountains are not random formations; they are purposeful creations, designed with precision to sustain life. When you look at a mountain, let it remind you of Allah's infinite care for His creation. He did not leave the earth unstable; He made it a safe, habitable home for you. And if He can stabilize the vast earth with mountains, how much more capable is He of stabilizing your heart with faith, your life with guidance, and your affairs with wisdom?

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse invites us to see the world around us through the lens of gratitude and awe. The mountains are not just scenery—they are a testament to Allah's mercy and His meticulous design. Every time you see a mountain range, remember that it is a sign pointing to its Creator. Let this strengthen your trust in Allah: the One who fixed the mountains in place is the same One who manages your affairs, hears your prayers, and knows what is best for you. Islam teaches us to look at creation with the eyes of the heart, recognizing that everything in existence is a message from our Lord, calling us to know Him, love Him, and submit to Him. So, stand in awe of His creation, and let it draw you closer to the One who created it all.
