Word Meanings:

  • Khayran (خَيْرًا): Goodness, benefit, or any inclination toward faith and righteousness.
  • La-Asma'ahum (لَأَسْمَعَهُمْ): To make them hear in a way that leads to understanding and acceptance.
  • La-Tawallaw (لَتَوَلَّوْا): They would have turned away, i.e., rejected and abandoned the truth.
  • Mu'ridun (مُعْرِضُونَ): Those who deliberately turn aside and avert themselves from something, showing aversion and stubbornness.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah reveals a deep truth about the nature of guidance and the human heart. He tells us that if He had known there was any goodness in these disbelievers who persistently rejected the message, He would have made them hear the Qur'an in a way that would penetrate their hearts and minds, enabling them to grasp His proofs and evidences. But because He knew—with His perfect, eternal knowledge—that there was no good in them, no seed of faith, no sincere desire for truth, He did not grant them that hearing which leads to acceptance.

Even more striking is the second part of the verse: even if He had made them hear, on the assumption that they might benefit, they would still have turned away in stubborn defiance. Their rejection was not due to lack of understanding or insufficient evidence—it was a matter of willful arrogance and deliberate aversion. They understood the truth, but they refused it out of pride and obstinacy, turning their faces away from it completely.

This verse teaches us a crucial lesson: guidance is not merely about hearing the words of truth; it is about the state of the heart. When a person sincerely seeks the truth, Allah opens their ears and hearts to receive it. But when a person is determined to reject, no amount of evidence or miraculous signs will change their course. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) conveyed the message with utmost clarity and perfection, but those who had sealed their hearts against the truth remained unmoved.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a beautiful and hopeful message for you. It shows that Allah's mercy and guidance are granted to those who possess even the smallest seed of goodness within them. If you find yourself seeking the truth, questioning, and desiring to know your Creator—know that this very desire is a sign of that goodness within you. Allah sees it, and He will not let it go to waste. He will open your ears and your heart to the Qur'an in ways you never imagined, and He will guide you step by step toward His light.

Do not be like those who heard the truth and turned away out of pride. Rather, be humble before your Lord, soften your heart with His remembrance, and respond to His call. For when Allah knows there is good in you, He will make you hear His words in a way that transforms your life forever. The door of guidance is open, and He is calling you—will you answer?

📜 Verse 21-25 — Al-Anfal

And do not be like those who say, "We have heard," while they do not hear.
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
Had Allah known any good in them, He would have made them hear. And if He had made them hear, they would [still] have turned away, while they were refusing.
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.
And fear a trial which will not strike those who have wronged among you exclusively, and know that Allah is severe in penalty.
