Word Meanings:
- As-Summ (الصُّمّ): Those who are deaf—specifically, those whose ears are closed to hearing the truth with acceptance.
- Al-Bukm (الْبُكْمُ): Those who are mute—unable or unwilling to speak the truth.
- Alladhina la ya'qilun (الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ): Those who do not use their intellect to comprehend Allah's commands and prohibitions.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah Almighty describes the worst of His creation that walks upon the earth. He declares that the most evil and despicable creatures in His sight are those who are deaf to the truth and mute from speaking it—those who do not reflect or understand. These are people who hear the words of guidance but block their hearts and minds from accepting them, and who see the signs of Allah yet refuse to acknowledge them. They are called "deaf" not because their ears are physically impaired, but because they do not listen with the intention to obey. They are called "mute" because their tongues are silent from proclaiming the truth and enjoining what is right. Most importantly, they are described as those who do not reason—they fail to use the very intellect Allah gave them to distinguish between guidance and misguidance.
This description serves as a powerful warning: the worst state a human being can reach is to possess faculties of hearing, speech, and reason, yet abandon them all in the pursuit of falsehood. Such people are even lower than animals, for animals at least follow their natural instincts, while these individuals reject the clear signs of their Creator.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound invitation to wake up and use the blessings Allah has given you. Your ears, your tongue, and your mind are not mere decorations—they are tools of worship and guidance. When you hear the Qur'an, let it penetrate your heart. When you know the truth, speak it with courage and kindness. When you reflect on the universe around you, let it lead you to your Lord. Do not be among those who have ears but do not hear, tongues but do not speak, and minds but do not think. Allah has honored you with these faculties—honor them back by using them in obedience to Him. The path of guidance is open, and the door of repentance is wide. Take the first step today, and you will find your Lord waiting with mercy and love.
