Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "falyanthur" (فَلْيَنظُرِ): Let him look, reflect, and ponder deeply — an invitation to use one's intellect and observation.
  • "al-insan" (الْإِنسَانُ): The human being — specifically referring here to the disbeliever who denies the resurrection and the blessings of Allah.
  • "ila ta'amihi" (إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ): To his food — the sustenance that he eats and that keeps him alive.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah calls upon every human being — especially the one who denies His power and the Hereafter — to cast a thoughtful, contemplative gaze upon the very food he eats. This is not a mere glance of habit, but a deep reflection on how this food came to be. From the moment the seed is buried in the earth, to the rain that falls from the sky, to the sprouting of the plant, and finally to the meal placed before him — every step is a miracle orchestrated by the Creator alone.

The verse invites the human being to trace the journey of his sustenance: the water that descends from the clouds, the soil that splits open to receive it, and the countless varieties of grains, fruits, and greens that emerge from it. All of this is provided for his nourishment and enjoyment, and for the benefit of his livestock as well. This reflection should lead him to recognize that the One who provides this food is the same One who created him, and who will resurrect him after death. Just as the dry earth springs back to life with water, so too will the dead be brought forth from their graves.

Moreover, the verse carries a deeper lesson: just as food undergoes transformation — from a raw seed to a ripe fruit, and then to nourishment within the body — so too does human life transform from one stage to another, from birth to death, and then to the eternal life of the Hereafter. Reflecting on this should awaken gratitude, humility, and faith in the heart.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause for a moment before your next meal. Look at the bread in your hand, the fruit on your plate, the water in your glass. Who brought it to you? Who created the rain, the soil, the sun, and the countless systems that worked together to produce this simple bite? This is not coincidence — it is the mercy and power of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. He who feeds you in this life is the same Lord who will raise you from the dead and judge you with perfect justice. Let this reflection draw you closer to Him, fill your heart with gratitude, and inspire you to live a life of obedience and love for your Creator. For indeed, in every morsel of food lies a sign of His existence, His power, and His boundless care for His creation.

Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
Then let mankind look at his food -
How We poured down water in torrents,
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
