Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kallā (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and denial, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It serves to refute a false notion and sternly warn against it.
- Lammā (لَمَّا): Here it means "not yet," indicating that something has not occurred up to the present moment.
- Yaqḍi (يَقْضِ): To fulfill, accomplish, or carry out completely.
- Mā amarah (مَا أَمَرَهُ): What He (Allah) commanded him — i.e., the obligations and duties Allah enjoined upon him.
Explanation of the Verse:
After describing how Allah created man from a humble drop of fluid, guided him to the path of right and wrong, and then caused him to die and be buried — only to resurrect him when He wills — Allah now delivers a decisive, corrective response to the arrogant disbeliever who thinks he has done enough for his Lord:
"No indeed! He has not yet fulfilled what Allah commanded him."
This verse strikes at the heart of human self-deception. The disbeliever — and indeed anyone who neglects their duties — may imagine that they have satisfied their obligations toward their Creator, that they have "done their part." But Allah refutes this assumption with absolute clarity: *Kallā* — no, it is not as you suppose. You have not even begun to fulfill what was required of you.
The command referred to here encompasses the fundamental duties of faith: sincere belief in Allah, gratitude for His countless blessings, obedience to His messengers, and the performance of the obligatory acts of worship. The human being, created from such a humble origin and granted such immense favors — life, intellect, guidance, provision — owes his Lord everything. Yet how quickly he forgets, how easily he becomes arrogant, and how little he actually delivers of what was entrusted to him.
This verse serves as a profound wake-up call. It reminds us that we are not in a position to bargain with Allah or to feel self-satisfied with our deeds. No matter how much we worship, how much we give in charity, or how much we strive in righteousness, we can never fully repay the blessings He has showered upon us. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "None of you will enter Paradise by his deeds alone." They asked: "Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "Not even me, unless Allah envelops me in His mercy."
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and reflect: Have you truly fulfilled what Allah commanded you? Have you established your prayers with humility and presence of heart? Have you given the poor their due rights? Have you spoken the truth even when it was difficult? Have you purified your soul from envy, pride, and heedlessness?
The verse does not leave us in despair — rather, it invites us to honesty and renewal. Allah did not create us to burden us beyond our capacity, but He did create us for a purpose: to know Him, worship Him, and live in obedience to His guidance. The door of repentance is always open, and His mercy embraces all who turn back to Him sincerely.
So let this verse be a gentle but firm reminder: do not claim to have done enough, for the journey of faith is continuous. Every day is a new opportunity to draw closer to Allah, to fulfill more of what He has commanded, and to seek His pleasure before the day when we return to Him. The one who realizes this and acts upon it is truly successful — for he has understood the purpose of his existence and the greatness of his Lord.
