Surah 'Abasa — Verse 5

Meanwhile, a blind man named Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum came to him seeking knowledge, but the Prophet, preoccupied with the influential figures, turned his attention away from him. Allah then revealed these verses to correct this approach.

The phrase "As for the one who considers himself self-sufficient" refers to the wealthy and arrogant leaders who felt no need for the Prophet's message. They were so consumed by their riches, status, and pride that they believed they had no need for Allah or His guidance. Their hearts were sealed with arrogance, and they turned away from the truth, thinking their worldly possessions were enough to secure their happiness and salvation.

Allah is pointing out the irony: the Prophet was eagerly engaging with those who had no desire for the truth, while neglecting the sincere seeker who was hungry for guidance. The verse gently reminds that the one who is "self-sufficient" in his own eyes—who feels no need for Allah—is not the one who will benefit from your attention, no matter how much effort you invest in him. His wealth and pride have blinded him, and he will not respond to your call.

The wealth that makes you feel independent today can vanish tomorrow; the health you boast of can fail you in an instant. But the one who turns to Allah in humility, acknowledging his need for guidance, has found the true treasure that never diminishes.

Let this verse inspire you to be like Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum—sincere, eager for knowledge, and humble before Allah. And let it also teach you to prioritize your time and energy on those who are genuinely seeking the truth, while never losing hope in Allah's power to guide even the most arrogant hearts. For Allah is the Turner of hearts, and His mercy encompasses all—but He loves those who come to Him with humility and sincerity.
